If you Google the definition of a headshot, you end up with a couple different options. It could either be a) a photograph of a person’s head or b) a bullet or gunshot aimed at the head. Since I only ‘shoot’ with a camera, let’s go with the first option!

Simply put, a headshot  is a portrait of someone’s face. Traditionally it’s a ‘head and shoulders’ portrait. This portrait is generally used for professional purposes and is often the first impression on your website, business card, online profile, etc.

Your headshot will say a lot about you, so make sure it’s an accurate representation of you and your unique brand. Choose wisely things like your outfit, makeup and photographer. It can really be a way for you to stand out from the crowd. We’ve all seen profile pictures of a person’s head being cropped out from a group image, or even worse, just a blank question mark! Invest in having a professional headshot taken of you – it will immediately make you stand out.

So who needs a headshot?

The short answer, in my opinion, is EVERYONE! If you’re in any profession that involves working with other people, you need a professional headshot.  People want to know who you are, not necessarily just what you do. Having a great image of yourself allows clients to connect with you and develop a bit of trust even before you’ve had the chance to meet face to face. Consistency is key, so if your business is professional, and has professional standards, make sure your headshot is also held to these standards

A great professional headshot really is an investment. Think about all the places you’re going to use it:

Business Cards
Website
LinkedIn Profile
Publications
Online profiles and directories
Social media sites

Heck, even for your online dating profile!

Take a peek at the image you’re using right now on your website, business cards, and professional online profiles. Is it up to date? Do you think it truly represents you and your unique brand? Is it professional? If you’re unsure, ask some friends and family for some advice. If you answered no to any of the questions, I would suggest investing in a professional headshot in the very near future.
