When it comes to headshots, there is no one standard procedure. Everyone is unique, and should be photographed that way! Getting to know my clients and gaining their trust is very important to me. Through these 5 simple questions, I learn a lot about my clients before even picking up my camera.

1. What is your profession?

What do you do for a living? This is a great initial question. Even before the session happens, I will have probably asked this, or figured it out, when the client has inquired with me. But even at the session, I will ask a bit more about his or her profession. It’s a great way to start a conversation and have them relax a little before having a camera in their face!

2. Have you ever been photographed for a headshot before?
This may be the client’s first time being photographed by a professional photographer. They have no idea what to expect and are possibly very nervous about it. If the response to this question is ‘no’, I will take a couple extra minutes to explain that I work closely with all my clients, which results in fabulous pictures that they actually like.

3. What do you like about your current headshot?
Getting to know what clients like about their current headshot is important. Maybe they prefer to be photographed from a certain angle or a side of their face. Often people are self conscious about something like one eye being smaller than the other, etc. (This is true for me!) When I know this information, I can work with it and keep it in mind while photographing. I want clients to know that my one goal through the whole process is that in the end they love their images!

4. What don’t you like about your current headshot?
I find clients have an easier time answering this question than the previous one. Most often after asking this question, I end up with a longer list compared to what they do like. After listening to everything that went wrong at their last session, or mistakes they made with wardrobe, hair, makeup, etc. I can make sure that their experience this time around is a much more positive one.

5. Where will the image be used?
This is a very important question. If the image is being used on a website, will it need to be horizontal or vertical? Does the background need to be a certain color so it matches the website? This is much easier to sort out before the photograph is taken. Often people assume all headshots are vertical, when in fact they could be either way!
