6 Tips to Choose The Right Brand Photographer For You

Finding the perfect-for-you brand photographer can seem like a daunting task. 😟 As brand photography is an investment in yourself and your business you want to make sure you get it right!

Whether you’re a seasoned business owner seeking to revamp your brand identity or a budding entrepreneur looking to make a powerful first impression, the right photographer can be the catalyst for success. But with countless photographers out there, each with their own style and approach, the search can be overwhelming.

Don’t worry, because I’m here to help!

I’ve written up my top 6 tips to choose the right brand photographer just for you!

6 Tips Choose Right Brand Photographer

1. Peep their portfolio

One of the first things you’re going to want to do is take a peek at their pics!

Check out their style and make sure it’s aligned with your brand vibe.  Is their style going to support and enhance your brand? Is their style consistent? If some images are dark and moody and others are light and bright, then this is a big red flag for consistency.

Can you see yourself in their images? Do they have a diverse portfolio? You want to hire someone with experience photographing people of varying ages, ethnicities, body shapes and sizes. You don’t want to have to fit into a photographer’s ‘box’ of what they think a personal brand “should” look like.

2. Check out their reviews

Look at their website, Google page and social to read testimonials clients have left. Are they positive?  Are they recent? As busy business owners, sometimes updating your website can get put on the back burner. That’s okay! You want to make sure the photographer regularly does brand photoshoots, so make sure to check out reviews in multiple places.

3. Snoop them on social

Take a peek at the photographer on FB and IG. Are they recently active? What kind of images are they posting? Are the images consistent with their website? Watch their videos and stories to see if you like their personality and vibe.
Take it a step further and view the tagged images to see how clients are using their pics.

4. Set up a time to chat

Take the time to set up a phone call or Zoom call with the photographer. (Hopefully this is something they offer!) This is a great time to ask any further questions and get to know them better. Do you feel comfortable talking to them? Do they take time to listen to you and learn more about your brand and biz? How long have they been doing brand photography?

5. What’s their specialty?

There are many types of photography to specialize in. Wedding, newborn, family, maternity, sports, etc. You wouldn’t want a sports photographer to also photograph your newborn as these are two totally different areas of expertise! If you see a photographer say they specialize in more than a few types of photography – this is not specializing! You want to find a photographer who actually specializes in brand photography and has experience with it.

Let’s be real – brand photography has become more and more popular the past few years and I’ve seen people say they ‘specialize’ in brand photography but when I look at their portfolio I can’t even see any branding images!

6. Learn about the process and what’s included

Before you sign on the dotted line, make sure you find out all the details and that they are aligned with your needs.

Ask questions about what’s included like:
Do they have a questionnaire to get to know you and your business?
Where can you use the images?
How much editing do they do?
How long does it take to receive the images?
What’s their availability like?
Is hair and makeup included?
What about location scouting – who is responsible for this?

These questions above are great to get more clarity on the whole process and if the photographer’s offering is a good fit for you.

In the end, don’t be afraid to interview a few different photographers and then trust your gut.
