Your Brand Photos Don’t Need a Blazer

Can we stop acting like putting on a blazer for your brand photos is the universal signal for ‘HELLO, I AM A PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS WOMAN’?

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good blazer. I own blazers. I’ve photographed some VERY good blazers.

But every once in a while, I’ll be talking to someone about outfits for their brand photos and they’ll say something like:

“I guess I should bring a blazer?”

And my first question is basically: Do you actually wear blazers?

Because if the answer is yes, absolutely bring it. But if you would never normally reach for a blazer, why are we suddenly dressing you up as Corporate Susan for your personal brand photos?

After all, you’re building a personal brand.

Professional Isn’t a Clothing Style

I want you to look put together in your brand photos. I want your photos to feel intentional. And I want you to look like the person someone would actually meet when they hire you.

But “professional” isn’t a clothing style.

Maybe for you it’s a bright pink sweater. Maybe it’s jeans and a great pair of shoes. Maybe it’s a leather jacket, a colourful dress, leopard print, a graphic tee or a jumpsuit.

And yes, maybe it IS the blazer.

The point is that I want it to look like YOU.

You Don’t Have to Dress Like Everyone Else in Your Industry

One of the biggest advantages of building a personal brand is that you don’t have to look exactly like everybody else doing the same job.

Actually, please don’t. 😂

If you’re a realtor, you don’t have to dress like every other realtor. If you’re a coach, you don’t need the Official Coach Uniform™. If you’re a financial planner, therapist, speaker, consultant, pharmacist, designer or anything else, there isn’t one outfit that suddenly makes you look qualified to do your job.

You can look professional AND have a personality.

In fact, I’d very much like you to.

Your clothing is another way to show people a little bit of who you are before they’ve ever met you. Your colours, your personal style and the things you genuinely love wearing can all help your brand photography feel more recognizable and more like you.

Start With YOU, Not What You Think You Should Wear

When we’re planning outfits for your brand photos, don’t start with:

“What am I supposed to wear?”

Start with:

“What would I wear if I wanted to feel like the BEST version of me?”

That’s a much better place to begin.

From there, we’ll make sure your outfits photograph beautifully, work with your brand, give us enough variety and make sense for where your business is headed.

And you don’t have to figure that part out alone. When you book a brand photoshoot with me, I send you a full style guide with outfit inspiration, and we’ll talk about wardrobe as part of planning your shoot.

The goal isn’t to dress you up as some imaginary version of what a business owner is supposed to look like.

It’s to make sure the person in your photos actually looks and feels like you on a really good day.

And if that includes a blazer?

Fine.

You may pick the blazer back up. 😂
